Tribal utility takes proactive approach to wastewater treatment issues
Where: Shannon and Jackson Counties of South Dakota on the Oglala Sioux Reservation.
Problem: Wastewater lagoon sites required operation and maintenance.
Solution: Midwest Assistance Program, Inc. staff assisted the Oglala Sioux Tribal Waste Water Department staff with a comprehensive assessment of all wastewater treatment systems operated by the Tribal Utility.
Sixteen waste water treatment lagoon sites scattered across the Oglala Sioux Reservation were identified as needing operation and maintenance. At the request of the Director of Tribal Waste Water programs, staff of the Midwest Assistance Program helped tribal staff with a comprehensive evaluation of all 16 lagoon sites under the control of the tribal utility.

As a result of these inspections, a detailed checklist of all operation and maintenance needs was completed and presented to the tribal wastewater department staff.
As follow-up action to this evaluation, the Midwest Assistance Program was able to secure funding from the Aberdeen Area Office of the Indian Health Service to present a two-day training to tribal utility staff on on-site wastewater treatment, proper operation and management of lagoon wastewater treatment, and proper scheduling of wastewater treatment activities.
