Private Wells/Septic

The Individual Well Program (IWP) is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on a national scale to develop and utilize a new assessment tool and host educational workshops on how to identify potential well issues, including contamination threats. Midwest Assistance Program, Inc. (MAP) will provide assistance and essential tools needed to  protect and improve the water quality of wells in unregulated well owner communities.

Yes. The U.S. EPA's rules that protect public drinking water systems do not apply to privately owned wells. Most states have rules for private wells, but these rules may not completely protect your private well. It is the well owner's responsibility to maintain their well and ensure it is safe to drink.

Should I test my well?

When should I test my well?

Check your well every spring to make sure there are no mechanical problems. Test your well once each year for contaminants. Also, test your well if you have replaced or repaired any part of your system.  The only way to find water contamination is through testing.

Maintaining your home’s wastewater system prevents costly repairs, protects property value, and keeps drinking water safe. Our assessments catch issues early and ensure your system works properly—protecting your health, home, and the environment.

What about my wastewater system?
